Pregnancy is filled with anticipation, change and so many fleeting moments. A maternity session allows you to slow down and preserve this meaningful season before your family welcomes its newest member. One of the most common questions expecting mothers ask is: When should I schedule maternity photos?
I generally recommend holding your maternity session toward the beginning of the third trimester. At this point, your belly is beautifully defined, but you are often still comfortable enough to walk, change positions and enjoy the session without feeling overly tired.
For many mothers, this falls somewhere around 28 to 32 weeks, although every pregnancy is different. Mothers expecting multiples or those who anticipate delivering early may choose to schedule a little sooner. The goal is to select a time when your pregnancy is clearly visible while still allowing you to feel relaxed, confident and comfortable in front of the camera.
Reserve Your Session Before the Third Trimester
Although the session itself usually takes place during the third trimester, it is best to contact your photographer earlier. Reserving your date during the second trimester gives us time to discuss your vision, choose a location, coordinate clothing and thoughtfully prepare for the experience.
Maternity sessions can focus entirely on the mother-to-be or include a spouse, children and the whole family. Including older siblings is especially meaningful because these portraits document not only your pregnancy, but also your family as it exists just before everything changes again.
For this summer session, we photographed the expecting mother alongside her husband and young son at a beautiful area of shoals. The flowing water, wooded surroundings and natural rock formations created a peaceful setting for both maternity portraits and playful family images.
The water also helped everyone stay cool on a warm Georgia summer day. Bare feet, splashing and room for their little boy to explore allowed the session to feel relaxed rather than overly posed. Along with traditional portraits, we captured movement, laughter and the sweet connections between each family member.
Consider the Season and Your Comfort
The season may also influence the timing and location of your maternity session. During warmer months, shaded locations, early evening light and access to water can make the experience much more comfortable. During cooler seasons, an outdoor session may be paired with cozy layers, or we can create timeless portraits indoors.
Your comfort always comes first. Choosing the right time of day, location and wardrobe allows you to feel at ease while still creating polished, meaningful imagery.
Book Your Newborn Session at the Same Time
Your third trimester is also an ideal time to reserve your newborn session – although many families choose to book both sessions even earlier.
Babies rarely follow an exact calendar, which is why I keep my newborn schedule intentionally light and flexible. Your due date serves as a placeholder rather than a firm session date. Once your baby arrives, we finalize the timing based on the birth date, your recovery and how your family is feeling.
This approach means that whether your little one arrives earlier or later than expected, you are guaranteed a place on my calendar. It also removes one more task from your list during those first tender and often sleep-deprived days at home.
Preserving the Story Before Baby Arrives
Maternity portraits are about more than documenting a growing belly. They preserve the anticipation, relationships and quiet excitement surrounding your baby’s arrival. Years from now, your child will be able to see how deeply loved they were before you had even met them.
