There is something special about celebrating a milestone birthday with portraits that feel completely like you. Turning 40 is certainly an occasion worth documenting, and this colorful 40th birthday photoshoot in Atlanta was the perfect mix of sophistication, personality and fun.

My client knew she wanted something vibrant with a bit of an urban feel for her birthday portraits. Instead of choosing a traditional portrait location, we photographed her at the same Atlanta venue where she would later celebrate her 40th birthday party. It gave the session an extra layer of meaning while providing the modern architectural lines and city atmosphere she envisioned.

Her bright green dress immediately set the tone for the session. Against the neutral tones of the surrounding architecture, the color really popped and gave the portraits a fresh, polished feel.

And, as if turning 40 wasn’t enough reason for a fresh start, she arrived with a brand-new haircut she had gotten that very day. It was such a fun detail to document and added even more confidence and personality to her portraits.

I used Westcott lighting throughout portions of the session to add a little extra drama and dimension to the images. The additional light allowed us to keep the vibrant colors rich while creating portraits that still felt natural and flattering. We also mixed in some black-and-white images for a more timeless look and a nice contrast to all of the color.

Bringing Personality Into a 40th Birthday Photoshoot

One of my favorite things about milestone portrait sessions is incorporating details that make the images personal. For this session, that meant plenty of celebratory touches.

There were oversized gold “4” and “0” balloons, a colorful bouquet of balloons and a beautiful cupcake bouquet. But perhaps the most memorable accessory was her incredible birthday cake purse. With its colorful floral detailing, it was a statement piece all on its own and fit the joyful feel of the session perfectly.

Rather than using these pieces in every portrait, we incorporated them throughout the session and also created plenty of classic images without props. This gave her a gallery with a wonderful mix — some portraits unmistakably celebrating her 40th birthday and others that could easily stand on their own as beautiful portraits for years to come.

I had the great opportunity to do some content creation photography for the local store, Bird & Brass. This Watkinsville, GA artist, Erika Pfluke, is a lover of birds and nature. Her entire store reflects that. She hand paints bibles for men and women showcasing her talent and passions. She needed some branding images of her work for a venture with a bible company, which is where I came in.

We decided to do her content creation photography session in her yard so that she did not have to haul her art too far and to be in a place that in comfortable to her. The outdoor session is also fitting for her artwork of flowers and birds. Nothing like painting nature in nature.

I had put together a storyboard for her along with a list of suggested items that would be perfect for her branding images – from wardrobe, paints, furniture, paint on apron, to accessories.

After her session, I brought some bibles and some personal items and things from her store to photograph the bibles in more detail. These flat lays highlight not only her artwork, but her brand as a whole.
