What To Wear For Fall Family Pictures

The most common question I get every year is….

What to wear for Fall family pictures

This family’s portraits taken on their property in the mountains is a great example of what to wear for your own photography session this year. Below I explain why this wardrobe selection works and how you can get your outfits to work for you!

complimentary colors

A good place to start in choosing colors for your outfits is to choose a color palette that has colors that compliment one another, rather than too many of the same or similar colors. It’s also important to make sure colors don’t clash. Sage green, cream, rust, tan, brown and blue all work well together as shown in this family’s portraits. Notice how the youngest family members rust colored velvet bow, cream sweater and brown boots bring in colors from everyone else’s outfits. Great example of how to coordinate in a subtle way.

go neutral

I highly recommend choosing outfits that follow a more neutral color palette. Especially when your session is at location in nature, it’s great to have Earthy colors that compliment, yet pop against the backdrop. Neutral colors are also a great way to make sure your images are timeless and beautiful.

limit patterns and big logos

This tip is especially crucial when choosing outfits, as busy patterns and big logos can be extremely distracting and if there are too many outfits with patterns in your group, can clash. Incorporate mostly solids in your outfits, and include patterns only when the majority outfits are solids, and when patterns are not as distracting. All family members here are wearing solids, except for the youngest sibling whose dress has delicate leaf detailing that is perfectly subtle and pulls everything together.

start with mom’s outfit

Women’s clothing comes in a multitude of designs, colors, and styles, and most times, women are more particular with their clothing than men, so having this as a foundation for the other outfits makes it easier to choose a color palette and style for your outfits. Start with one outfit, and build on it one-by-one. I suggest starting with the hardest person to please and have everyone coordinate to that outfit.

confidence is key

The most important factor in choosing your outfits is to wear something that you feel comfortable and confident in. You’ll want to choose something that fits you well and makes you feel good about yourself!

Fall Family Photography in Watkinsville, GA

Fall family photography sessions are underway! Perfect time for those Holiday greeting cards and gifts to loved one (and for yourself). This little man and his parents celebrated the season with portraits that can be hung on the walls with love as well as Christmas cards. Simple change of clothes and a few personal props changed out the vibe in a subtle way.

This Southern baby boy wore a family heirloom in blue for the majority of their fall family photography session. One of his nephews wore the exact same outfit a few years back. Love the sentimentalism with passed down wardrobes. Blue happens to look good on him too. I mean, just look at those eyes pop!

I first photographed mom and dad for their engagement portraits a few years back, so it was such a delight to be able to do their family portraits with their baby boy as their clan grows. What an honor.

The baby Moses basket is a favorite for family session when a baby is involved. Great way for a little one to stabilize themselves and is a timeless piece that just makes sense.

A simple outfit change, addition of an antique sleigh and one of the family’s Christmas decorations made things a bit more fitting for what they wanted for their Christmas cards.

Autumn Family Photography in Watkinsville, GA

Autumn family photography is a fan favorite. There is nothing like those crisp days with the beautiful colors of the season. This family opted for a shorter Simplicity Session for their portraits. Not only did it help with schedules, but also with the cooler temps we had that evening. We went directly across the street from their house, which made things that much more convenient for this family.

Love how they coordinated with their wardrobe for their autumn family photography session. Navy, green, cream and tan is such a classic combination. Perfect for their Christmas greeting cards too.
