Fall Portrait Photography | Queeny Park

Fall portrait photography sessions are nearing an end, but there are still more in store. Such a great time of year for those who love the vibrant colors this season brings. I traveled to St. Louis for commissioned work and had the opportunity to photograph this family once again. I have been documenting them since their girls were infants. Just look at them now!!!! Beautiful young ladies.

This family was hoping for Fall portrait photography in a place of nature with lots of color and Autumn vibes. Found it!!!!! We did their session in the late morning. It was an overcast day, which actually worked out perfectly. Nice diffused light and allowed us to utilize this open field without worrying about harsh light or keeping us contained to a smaller area.

Love the color palette mom chose for her family’s wardrobe. The mustard yellow, sage green, cream and blue was prefect for this location and the colors in their natural surroundings. Great example of what to wear for Fall portrait photography.

Finishing up Fall portrait photography sessions in the next couple of weeks and then we will be heading into Winter portraits. Lots of beauty in this season and the next! Inquire for options and to be added to the calendar. Both Simplicity and Signature sessions are available. Looking forward to seeing your family soon. info@yvonneniemannphotography.com  |  706.713.0676

What To Wear For Fall Family Pictures

The most common question I get every year is….

What to wear for Fall family pictures

This family’s portraits taken on their property in the mountains is a great example of what to wear for your own photography session this year. Below I explain why this wardrobe selection works and how you can get your outfits to work for you!

complimentary colors

A good place to start in choosing colors for your outfits is to choose a color palette that has colors that compliment one another, rather than too many of the same or similar colors. It’s also important to make sure colors don’t clash. Sage green, cream, rust, tan, brown and blue all work well together as shown in this family’s portraits. Notice how the youngest family members rust colored velvet bow, cream sweater and brown boots bring in colors from everyone else’s outfits. Great example of how to coordinate in a subtle way.

go neutral

I highly recommend choosing outfits that follow a more neutral color palette. Especially when your session is at location in nature, it’s great to have Earthy colors that compliment, yet pop against the backdrop. Neutral colors are also a great way to make sure your images are timeless and beautiful.

limit patterns and big logos

This tip is especially crucial when choosing outfits, as busy patterns and big logos can be extremely distracting and if there are too many outfits with patterns in your group, can clash. Incorporate mostly solids in your outfits, and include patterns only when the majority outfits are solids, and when patterns are not as distracting. All family members here are wearing solids, except for the youngest sibling whose dress has delicate leaf detailing that is perfectly subtle and pulls everything together.

start with mom’s outfit

Women’s clothing comes in a multitude of designs, colors, and styles, and most times, women are more particular with their clothing than men, so having this as a foundation for the other outfits makes it easier to choose a color palette and style for your outfits. Start with one outfit, and build on it one-by-one. I suggest starting with the hardest person to please and have everyone coordinate to that outfit.

confidence is key

The most important factor in choosing your outfits is to wear something that you feel comfortable and confident in. You’ll want to choose something that fits you well and makes you feel good about yourself!

Autumn Family Photos In St. Louis

As you may know, I started my photography business in St. Louis, so it is always an honor that my clients from back then invite me back year after year to document their families and big milestones. I have been photographing this family since their very first child was born. Amazing to see their family grow and their children grow as well.

We did their Autumn family photos in their back yard. They live behind a golf course and have an amazing wooded lot with a tiny natural field that is just divine at sunset. On this particular day, it started drizzling just as we begun their session, but they decided to continue with their session since schedules are hard to open up for this busy crew. Luckily the drizzle was not constant until the very end when we were just finishing up their session. You would never know about the elements by looking at these images though.

Autumn family sibling photos in St. Louis

I have always loved the relationship this brother and sister duo have. It has always been special and big brother has always been the protector AND the one that can get little sis to laugh and smile. Smitten with these two!

Mom had mentioned that the trees weren’t vibrant quite yet, but I think the mix of colors as the trees were beginning to change is quite divine. Made things a bit different from the year before too. Great location for Autumn family photos. They are lucky to have this view – especially living in St. Louis.
