What to Wear – Summer Family Portraits

Summer is here and with that come the big question, “What am I going to wear for my summer portraits?” Don’t worry. With every photography session booked with Yvonne Niemann Photography, I give tips on wardrobe and will help you with just that dilemma. Below is an example of what to wear for a family photo session in the Summer. Notice how everyone coordinates well together, but it’s not too matchy matchy? No uniforms here. 😉 I always suggest that mom picks out her outfit first. Something that makes her feel pretty! Then have the rest of the family coordinate around what she’s wearing. It’s also helpful to have a color palette in mind. In the example below, green, cobalt blue and a pale blue makes up the colors in the family’s wardrobe. Mom’s dress and shoes are picked up in the boy’s shirts and shoes. Baby sister’s dress and shoes ties in the all of the other family member’s clothing choices, while remaining sweet and fresh. Each person would look great on their own and with each different grouping during their photography session. Perfection!

When choosing your summer wardrobe for your upcoming portraits, make sure to also think of the location so that the colors and style works well with your surroundings. Each photography session with Yvonne Niemann Photography is customized to suite each client’s style and needs. If you already have a color palette in mind, let me know before I location scout for your session. If you aren’t sure what you are going to wear, I will give you suggestions on colors after my location scout and after we work together to decide on the perfect final location of your portraits!

There’s a reason I plan my sessions for the edges of the day. Right before sunrise and just before sunset, the sun sits low on the horizon, wrapping everything in soft, golden light. It’s flattering, gentle on skin tones, and creates that dreamy glow you simply can’t replicate at noon. The wind calms, the beach feels peaceful, and the magic naturally unfolds.

This sweet mother-daughter moment was captured on Jekyll Island at Driftwood Beach just as the sun was rising — when the sky turns pastel and the reflections shimmer along the shoreline.

When you trust the light, you get images that feel timeless, effortless, and full of heart.
