Watermelon Lemonade Recipe

Watermelon lemonade taken by Athens GA food photographer Yvonne Niemann

I absolutely adore watermelon and lemons. In fact, when I was pregnant I craved watermelon and my husband used to joke that he thought I was going to give birth to a watermelon. My mom craved lemons when she was pregnant with me, so I suppose it’s not a surprise that I cannot get enough of these summer fruits!

I had a bunch of watermelon left over from my daughter’s last day of school and decided to make some homemade watermelon lemonade to make good use of what we had. Delicious! This is the first time I made this drink, which is a bit surprising. We make a lot of fresh lemonade in the summer, but for some reason I never thought to add watermelon. This was a bit of an experiment and it turned out great. I didn’t even have to add sugar since the watermelon was so sweet. Win, win!

2 lbs watermelon flesh

2 whole lemons

4 cups water

Cut up watermelon and lemons to fit into a juicer. (I left the skins on the lemons) Juice fruit, add to a pitcher and combine with water. Taste to see if you need to add any sugar. Serve over ice and enjoy! You can garnish with lemon slices, watermelon balls and perhaps some fresh mint leaves if you wish. For a refreshing adult drink, substitute water with champagne or your favorite white or rose wine.
