“It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy that makes happiness.” ~ Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Last night, these two came to the Yvonne Niemann Photography outdoor studio for a petite session. This handsome nine year old’s mom contacted me saying that she wanted to capture her son’s smile, his freckles and his beautiful eyes. She said that he has been in the best of moods over the summer and wanted tween photography portraits documenting this time of his life. I urged her to consider getting in a few shots too as I think it is really important for our children to have images of their parents. This time is so fleeting and it would be a shame not to take the opportunity to freeze the moment through a professional photographer’s camera. I am so glad that she decided at the last minute to join her son in a few images. These images will not only be treasured by her, but also her son. They have such a special bond and the love he has for his mom is so apparent. He will look back at these images over time and see the joy, love and beauty of his mom. She will see the adoration of her son towards her, his beautiful smile, those sparkling eyes, summer sprinkled freckles and the man he is becoming.
I know that as a mom myself, I sometimes have excuses to not get in front of the camera – perhaps I think I need to lose a few pounds, get in better shape, find that “perfect” outfit, want to grow out my hair a bit more, want to wait for a visible scar to heal, etc… But, then I stop and remind myself how my daughter views me and how I viewed my own parents. I think all children see their moms as perfect and beautiful women and their dads are perfect, handsome and super heroes. They don’t see our flaws. In fact, most of the time, they embrace them. I remind myself that me being in front of the camera is not only for me, but most importantly, for my daughter. I will not be around forever and I want her to have images of me when I am gone. I want to be present in her daily life, but I also want to be present in pictures for her. I want proof that I existed and of our love.
