If you are planning on having your photos taken soon, you may be wondering what to wear for Winter outdoor portraits. You are not alone! Many people choosing to hold outdoor sessions during this season most likely have the same concerns as you. The weather can be a bit unpredictable in Georgia this time of year, so you aren’t sure if it will be cold or warm. Don’t worry. I got you covered!
Layers are your best friend!
Layers are a saving grace during this time of year. Not only will it keep you warm, but it is stylish as well. In the images below, it was windy and in the upper 40s. You would never know it though. Mom layered the boys in pullover sweaters with long sleeve tops underneath. They are wearing stylish corduroy pants that coordinate well with their sweaters while keeping things cozy. Snuggles are always good too! Not only does it warm your body, but your soul too!
Notice how dad is working the layers here too. Perfect example of what to wear for Winter outdoor portraits. Mom chose a color palette of blue and gray. It really works nicely with this time of year, their personalities and the style of their home, which is where the finished artwork will be displayed. Regardless of the season, the same rules apply when choosing your family’s wardrobe. You will want to choose a color palette that will work with your surroundings as well as where you will be displaying your portraits. I usually tell mom’s to choose their outfit first and have everyone coordinate to what she is wearing. You don’t want to be too matchy matchy, but rather choose items that shows off individual personalities and work well together. Stay away from items of clothing with writing on them. Neutral solids are always nice with some small details. You want your clothing to be a reflection of who you are while keeping the focus on you!
If you want even more warmth, consider layering with stylish Winter coats, scarves and hats. Think of footwear too. Most closed toed shoes will be perfect, but boots can be a nice option as well. Layers photograph beautifully, so have fun with it and embrace the season!
As a family photographer, it is my job to choose a location that will work well and to keep things moving so that people can stay as warm as possible. This particular location had trees and hills behind the boys and off to the sides, which shielded them a bit from the wind. We played a lot of games to stay warm too. I always bring items to help with the cooler temps as well. All things you don’t have to worry about when planning your session! I got you covered!
