Senior Beach Session Tips

Sessions at the beach are always a great idea – especially if it is at a meaningful place and will fit your home decor. If you are planning on doing a senior beach session in the near future, here are a few beach session tips to help things run smoother.

what to wear senior portraits soon the beach

Timing is everything.

I would recommend holding your session on the first day if possible. This will make it so that you can relax for the rest of your vacation, but you also don’t have to worry about tan/burn lines. Sunrise or sunset sessions are the best time in terms of lighting – but this is going to depend on where you are. Some beaches are best at sunrise and some are better at sunset. Talk to your photographer and heed their advice on this. For this particular session, we could have done sunrise or sunset due to where the sun is in relation to the beach. We settled on a sunset session so this senior could sleep in, but also dodge morning rain.

Beach hair tips.

Wind and humid are a thing for beach sessions. Plan accordingly when styling your hair. If your hair tends to frizz, style your hair in a way where it won’t be as much of an issue and use products to help cut down the frizz. Beachy hair is beautiful. For girls, try an updo, braids, barrettes, hats or other accessories that will work with the elements. As your photographer, I will try to find a some areas before we get on the beach for some portraits where the wind will be a bit more blocked. This will ensure that your hair is looking its best before the wind and humidity take over. I will also try to position you in ways where the wind blows your hair in the most flattering way possible.

Make up tips.

For make up, don’t go too heavy. You don’t want your makeup to melt. Waterproof mascara is always a good idea. A polished, more natural look is always fitting for the beach. Think dewey skin, flushed cheeks and a pretty pop of color on your lips. Make sure that your lip gloss doesn’t make your hair stick to your lips. Wind and sticky lips/makeup aren’t a good combination. Consider a gel manicure and pedicure before your beach portrait session. Salt water and sand tend to make nail polish come off.

What to wear for your beach session.

A soft color palette in natural and flowing fabrics is always a win. Think of fabrics that breathe and move. Natural linens, tulle and cotton are all great ideas. Comfort is key. For the ladies, make sure your dress or skirt isn’t too short as you don’t want to risk showing too much when you move and when the wind picks up your garment. Textures are great to add some more interest and can even mimic the waves and sand beautifully too. Go bare foot and enjoy the natural pedicure you will get from the sand. Wear clothes that allow you to get your feet wet!

If you are doing a family portrait session on the beach with your senior, I suggest your graduate picks their outfit first and then have everyone coordinate to them. You don’t have to be matchy matchy. Use some of the color palettes listed below for inspiration. I am always here to help you with your selection too!

Beach wardrobe color palettes.

For color palettes, I suggest softer hues. White, cream and sandy taupes are popular options. Variations of colors found at the beach are also great options blues, greens, taupes and white. Pastels also work wonderfully for a beach photo session.

Go with the flow.

Snuggle, explore and have fun. If you are doing a senior session or a beach photo session by yourself, get ready to walk, run, kick and wade in the water. If you have family and/or friends joining you, then you will do all of those things, but there will also be a lot of snuggling, laughing and playing too. Just have fun with it and go with the flow. Don’t worry so much about your hair and things out of your control. Trust that I will do my best to capture the most flattering images of yourself and of your family.

Items to bring to your senior beach session.

I will bring a little kit of essentials, such as hair spray, nail polish remover, bug spray, brush, hair pins, wipes. I recommend that you bring some items as well to help you before, during and after your session.

  • Drinking water
  • Facial blotting papers
  • Lip balm and/or lipstick
  • Flip flops
  • Towel
  • Change of outfit (in case yours gets wet or sandy and you have plans to go somewhere afterwards)

What To Document At Baby’s Nine Month Milestone Portrait Session

Is your baby about to reach the big nine month birthday and you would like do a photo session, but not sure exactly what to document? Don’t worry! I’ve got you covered.

There is no reason to stress or feel the need to hold a milestone session on an exact date.

At Yvonne Niemann Photography, I always suggest photographing your baby at certain milestones instead of a specific month during the first year of life. Every baby hits stages of development at different times. There are certain months that most babies are hitting certain milestones, so I like use those timeframes as a guide. Let your baby develop at their own pace and document things as they happen.

Growth

If you are documenting your baby’s milestones throughout the first year, consider showing their growth by taking a series of pictures at each portrait session that is the same set-up or location. Below is a good example of this. For this baby’s newborn, three month, six month and now nine month session, I took portraits of baby with her Cuddle + Kind dolls as well as images of her mom and her in this window seat in the nursery.

Milestones – ON THE MOVE!!!!!!

Most babies begin crawling, pulling themselves up and standing while holding onto something around nine months. It is a great time to document as your baby is getting bigger, is most likely on the move (or about to…), and can sit very independently now. Some babies are even beginning to take their first steps. Long gone are the days where your baby will just lay or sit still for long periods of time. Don’t worry, I move fast to keep up with babies to get the most precious images.

Personality

Their personalities are really taking off around nine months and you will be able to get so many different facial reactions and interaction images with family members. You most likely know exactly what will make your baby smile, laugh or make other adorable reactions that you love so much. Let’s use all those tricks during your session to get exactly what you want to remember about this stage! I have a few tricks up my sleeve too, so all of us working together as a team is a sure way to make the session run smooth.

Family Heirlooms

If you have wardrobe pieces that you, or your significant other, wore at this same age as a baby, why not dress your little one in those items! The sentimental meaning of those images will become family favorites. There is nothing like seeing your own baby wearing something you wore yourself. Really brings things full circle. If you don’t have heirloom pieces, consider buying something special that you know you will pass down to your baby when they have their own babies! It doesn’t have to be clothing either. I have clients who have used family heirlooms that consist of jewelry, handmade quilts, blankets, rattles, etc…

The Nursery

There is something so special about documenting your baby and family in your home to really showcase this exact time your lives. You have spent a lot of time decorating your baby’s nursery, so why not archive it to share with generations to come! Your baby is most likely very comfortable in their room since it is so familiar. Let them play and be themselves! This is even a great time to catch a few sleeping images if your session overlaps with nap time. This nine month old little girl has an amazing rocking unicorn and mom wanted to make sure we got some images of her with it, just like we did with her brother around the same age with his rocking horse. She is not at the point where she can rock on it by herself, but she could pull herself up and stand while holding onto it just fine! Mom helped with the riding of the unicorn, which resulted in some adorable and meaningful images.

Start Planning First Birthday

This is a great time to start thinking and planning your baby’s first birthday party, so having some amazing images to display at the big event is a sure win and one less thing to check off your list of things to get done! Sure, you will want portraits of your baby around their first birthday, but if you need printed portraits for the big celebration, this is the time to get that done. Will give you plenty of time to select your favorite images, get them printed, framed and delivered to you.

I hope these tips help you plan your baby’s nine month milestone portrait session.
